Maryalice Gowen is a nurse who helps coordinate the care of children who have heart failure, need a heart transplant or require mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices, which help the heart function. In coordinating her patients' care, Gowen works closely with their families, providing education, resources and support. She also helps train other nurses, doctors, physician assistants, perfusionists (technicians who operate cardiopulmonary bypass machines during heart surgery) and medical students in how best to manage the care of patients who require MCS

In her research, Gowen participates in patient registries (organized systems of collecting data that can be used for medical studies) related to heart failure, the prevention of blood clots and the dynamics of blood flow, as well as registries related to education and communication on these topics.

Gowen earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing at Hartwick College.

A resident of Lake Tahoe, Gowen spends her free time enjoying whatever outdoor activities are in season, such as hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding.
