Cystic Fibrosis Gastroenterology & Liver Clinic

Cystic fibrosis (CF) affects many parts of the body in addition to the lungs. At the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Gastroenterology and Liver Clinic, we offer comprehensive care for children and adolescents whose CF interferes with their digestive function.

Most people with CF produce a sticky mucus that causes problems with the digestive system, such as constipation, gallstones, liver disease and rectal prolapse (when the lowest segment of the large intestine protrudes from the anus). One common issue occurs when this mucus blocks digestive enzymes from the pancreas, resulting in loose, greasy stools; difficulty gaining weight; and vitamin deficiencies.

To address your child's specific gastrointestinal needs, a pediatric gastroenterologist and a cystic fibrosis dietitian from our clinic will work closely with you as well as with the pediatric pulmonologists at the Cystic Fibrosis Center. Our shared goal is to help your child thrive.

We welcome patients who are new to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals as well as referred patients who receive care at other UCSF clinics.
